Understanding Your Insurance Declaration Page

February 25, 2026·5 min read·Auto Insurance

What Is a Declaration Page?

The declaration page (or "dec page") is the summary of your entire insurance policy on one or two pages. It shows your coverages, limits, deductibles, premiums, and who/what is covered.

Key Sections of Your Dec Page

1. Named Insured

Your name and address. Make sure this is correct — errors can cause claim denials.

2. Policy Period

Start and end dates. Most policies are 6 or 12 months.

3. Vehicles Listed

Year, make, model, and VIN for each covered vehicle. Every vehicle you drive should be listed.

4. Drivers Listed

All household members of driving age should be listed, even if they rarely drive your vehicles.

5. Coverage and Limits

This is the most important section. It shows each type of coverage and your limit/deductible:

  • Liability: BI 100/300, PD 50
  • Collision: $500 deductible
  • Comprehensive: $500 deductible
  • UM/UIM: 100/300
  • 6. Premium

Total cost broken down by coverage type. This shows you exactly what you're paying for.

    Red Flags to Watch For

⚠️ Liability too low: If you see 15/30/5, you're underinsured

⚠️ Missing vehicles: Any car you drive should be listed

⚠️ Missing drivers: Unlisted household members = potential claim denial

⚠️ No UM/UIM coverage: 15% of CA drivers are uninsured — protect yourself

⚠️ High premium for old car: You may be overpaying for comprehensive/collision
